Pelvic Health and Wellness

When it comes to women’s pelvic health and wellness, finding a physician dedicated to treating specific female problems that centers on pregnancy and reproduction can be challenging.   At En Sante Clinic and Medical Spa we focus on finding solutions to complex pelvic health problems that are often neglected or brushed aside in the medical field.

According to a recent study as many as 15-30% of women suffer from pelvic pain, caused by hormonal and inflammatory conditions that interfere with life, careers, social activities and relationships.  Women often do not talk openly about pain and other troubling symptoms because they think it’s all part of being a female.  However, there are a number of medical diagnoses specific to women that are often swept under the rug.

A painful gynecologic problem for women that is caused by ectopic endometrial tissue in other parts of the body other than the uterus where it’s supposed to be.   These abnormally loathed endometrial tissues secrete inflammatory fluids that irritate the pelvis and surrounding tissues.  Although this abnormality is typically found in the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvis, Endometriosis or endometrial tissues have been found in odd places such as lungs, ears and even brains of some women.

Interstitial Cystitis

Another painful disorder that has illusive the healthcare community so much so that is has been rebranded as “Painful Bladder Syndrome”  It is yet be known what exactly causes painful bladder syndrome except that it is a disease of inflammation of the bladder urethra and adjacent tissue and often presents as pelvic pain, burning with urination without actual infection or the experience pain during and after sex.

Lichen Sclerosus

This is a strange condition that affects extremes of age.  It is  often diagnosed in by young girls before puberty or women around and after menopause.  It often presents as irritation, itching and discomfort arising from my tears and bruises in the mucosa or skin and may be triggered by trauma, infection or immune dysregulation.

Lichen Planus

Similar to Lichen Sclerosis but is more common and affects a wider range of ages.  Symptoms include itching, discomfort and cracking of the skin or mucosal membranes.   A layer of patchy white appearance may appear on some areas of the affected skin.  Lichen Planus may be the result of an exaggerated and prolonged immune response to infection, or contact with allergic substances.

Urogenital Syndrome (GSM)

Previously called vulvovagnial atrophy, GSM is a problem that affects a wide range of      women as it is a condition that happens due to decreased estrogen in the body.  Because there is a lot of conditions that women face that is associated with low estrogen levels women who are not menopausal face similar symptoms and problems at one point or another in life.  It may be due to high dose progestin medications in oral contraceptives, or from other medications used to decrease estrogen levels such as Tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention and treatment. Breastfeeding during the postpartum period can cause similar bothersome symptoms for women.  Commons symptoms associated with GSM are:-

  • vaginal dryness
  • pelvic pain or pressure
  • vaginal itching or burning
  • painful intercourse
  • vague discomfort or irritation
  • reduced lubrication
  • decreased arousal
  • bleeding during or after sex
  • increased discharge

Myofascial pelvic pain syndrome

Hypersensitive, tight and inflamed pelvic muscles that cause chronic pelvic pain.  It may be triggered or caused by birth trauma from vaginal deliveries, stretching from pregnancy, previous pelvic surgries, abuse, decreased blood supply to the muscles or sprains for repetitive activity

Uterine Prolapse

Prolapse is when the pelvic organs, particularly the uterus looses it’s support from stretching during pregnancy, heavy lifting or other activities such that the pelvic tissue and organs begin to descend in the vaginal canal.

Uterine Procidentia

This is the most severe form of uterine prolapse to the point where the uterus becomes exposed beyond the vaginal canal and is now outside of  the body.

Intense pain of the lower pelvic area that is expressed as burning, itching or irritation, affecting daily activities

Redness, irritation  and inflammation of the introitus, not caused by infection.
